A clean and tidy workplace is an essential aspect of any business. So when you’re considering hiring professional cleaners, it’s important to know what’s included in commercial cleaning. Now more than ever, it’s essential that business owners keep their workplace safe, healthy, and clean for all workers. Following the pandemic, it’s crucial that employees feel comfortable going to work every day, and cleaning frequently is one way to do so.

What’s Included in Commercial Cleaning

Weekly

Here is a baseline of what you should always expect with weekly commercial cleaning. Of course, depending on your needs and the type of workplace you have, you might require some of these tasks to be done daily.

Some of the main weekly commercial cleaning services include:

  • Trash: Empty trash cans and replace liners inside the cans. Cans should also be washed and disinfected on an as-needed basis.
  • Dusting: All surfaces of tables, chairs, desks, and furniture should be dusted. This needs to be done before vacuuming. The entryway to the workplace should be dusted in corners, baseboards, and walls as well.
  • Vacuum: All floors should be vacuumed of all dirt and debris. This includes all mats that are laid on top of hard floors.
  • Disinfect: All surfaces should be wiped with a disinfectant, and all hard floors should be mopped with a disinfectant as well.
  • Glass and Windows: The internal side of all glass surfaces, including windows and tables, should be cleaned and polished so you don’t see any streaks, fingerprints, or dirt.
  • Elevators: If the building has elevators, they should be disinfected at least once per week, inside and out.
  • Polish: All door and cabinet handles that are brass or some other metal should be polished.
  • Tidy Up: In addition, commercial cleaning service should include a general tidying up of all areas. While the cleaning company should not in any way re-arrange someone’s workstation, they should ensure all common areas and floor space is free of clutter and that everything is returned the way they found it before moving it to clean.

Monthly

In addition to a weekly cleaning checklist, you should also consider a deep clean checklist to perform monthly. Here are some commercial cleaning services that you may want to include:

  • Windows: If the exterior windows are accessible, they should be cleaned monthly. Most commercial cleaning services will have the ability to clean all exterior windows on a building.
  • Vents: Keeping the interior air quality high is very important in a work environment, and it has received increased attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vacuuming the air vents helps ensure better air quality.
  • Chairs: If the workplace has material chairs, they should be vacuumed monthly as well. If there are stains or marks, they can be spot cleaned at this point as well.
  • Furniture: Just like chairs, all furniture, and other upholstery should be vacuumed and cleaned every month. You may choose to do this more often for furniture that the public sits in, such as chairs and couches in a waiting room.
  • Appliances: Cleaning the interior of the refrigerator, freezer, and microwave

Semi-Annual Commercial Cleaning Services

This final group of commercial cleaning services can either be done twice a year or quarterly, depending on the type of business and workplace, and the business owners’ needs. These are important items, but they are time-consuming and don’t need to be done as often, specifically because their effects are longer-lasting. Some of the main semi-annual commercial cleaning services include:

  • Grout and Tile: The tile and grout should get a deep scrubbing and cleaning at least twice a year. A lot of build-up can happen on these surfaces, which is why it needs to be cleaned thoroughly. Cleaning the grout well will also protect the long-term integrity of floors and backsplash.
  • Carpets: At least twice a year, all carpets should be shampooed. This is a much deeper cleaning than typical vacuuming. If there are stains, they will be removed at this point. Bad stains should be spot cleaned not long after the issue happened.
  • Building Exterior: The building exterior should be power washed at least once a year, if not twice. Again, this depends on the type of building involved. Brick, siding, and stucco need this treatment, but glass does not.
  • Ducts: Some commercial cleaning services will also perform a deep cleaning of ductwork. Not all commercial cleaning companies do this, though, so check with yours to find out. If they don’t, this can be typically handled by an HVAC company.

Essential Areas to Consider

Bathrooms

Bathrooms should receive a deep cleaning at least once a week, though this can certainly be an item that is done on a more consistent basis. During the deep cleaning, all toilets, surfaces, and floors should be disinfected thoroughly. This includes all faucets, door knobs, and other areas that people touch with their hands.

Mirrors should be wiped clean with no streak marks at least once a week during the deep clean phase.

In addition, paper products should be replaced a few times per week, and trash should be removed from the receptacles as well. Trash receptacles in bathrooms should also be disinfected at least once per week.

Kitchens and Break Rooms

Did you know that there is a higher risk of workers getting sick from kitchens, break rooms, lunch rooms, and other areas where people congregate in groups? Following the pandemic and with flu season coming up shortly, it’s essential that all areas where your employees talk, eat, and drink are kept sanitary. If you’re hiring a commercial cleaning service for this task, at the very least, you should include weekly cleaning, if not more.

During this process, all floors should be vacuumed and mopped with a disinfectant product. The outside of the refrigerator, microwave, water cooler, and coffee pot should be disinfected as well. All surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, as should any sinks where workers may wash their dishes.

Every month, commercial cleaning may also include a much more thorough cleaning and disinfecting of the interior of the refrigerator, freezer, and microwave. These are often-forgot-about areas of a workplace kitchen that have a relatively high risk of causing illness if they’re not properly cleaned and sanitized.

Specialty Commercial Cleaning

Much of the items mentioned above will be found in a majority of workplace environments. Whether you’re dealing with a commercial office building, a retail store, or a warehouse, all will need some combination of the services already mentioned–though they may have different needs in terms of the timing of those services.

Some business types require specialty cleaning, though. Here are some examples of those:

  • Auto Dealerships: In addition to the typical office environment cleaning, an auto dealership has a strong need to have the vehicles in their showroom looking in tip-top shape at all times. Some may decide to hire a commercial cleaning service to thoroughly clean the exterior and interior of these cars a few times a week, as well as disinfect the interior.
  • Manufacturing: These types of businesses have very specific needs. They might be dealing with certain chemicals or waste that other office environments don’t, for example. Commercial cleaning services for this sector should be specialized and certified in handling this type of product.
  • Restaurants and Bars: Eateries have the typical cleaning needs of other places where people congregate, but they have very specific needs in certain areas. The kitchens and bars, for example, need to be thoroughly cleaned on a nightly basis. While the kitchen and bar staff will handle a good portion of that cleaning, commercial cleaning services may be called in for a weekly deeper clean.
  • Laboratory: Labs and pharmaceutical companies deal with chemicals and compounds consistently. These materials are very fragile, and the equipment they use is as well. Commercial cleaning in this sector of business takes a very specific approach and skillset that isn’t always found at every company.
  • Health care: Likewise, healthcare facilities such as hospitals and doctor’s offices have specific needs when it comes to cleaning. In fact, these environments don’t just need deep cleaning; certain areas must be considered sterile. Commercial cleaning services that handle this type of cleaning need to be prepared to know how to handle these situations, as it could be a life-or-death scenario for patients.

Choose a Trusted Commercial Cleaning Company

There’s a lot that goes into cleaning a commercial facility. Beyond just completing the tasks, businesses also need to trust that the job is done correctly. Cleaning isn’t about just making things appear pretty and less dirty; it involves the safety of all people who work and frequent places of business.

Now that you know what’s included in commercial cleaning, it’s time to start researching your options! Remember, if you’re looking for a commercial cleaning service that meets your needs, it’s always safe to choose one that has years of experience in the industry.
